KVI
A Lens for Sensing Meaningful Change — Beyond the Numbers
Have you ever introduced a new system or tool — only to hear, “But where’s the measurable result?” Not all important changes show up as numbers. Shifts in tone, relationships, or quiet signals from the field often carry more meaning than raw metrics.
At Soralist, we use KVI (Key Value Indicator) to capture and share these qualitative signs of progress — signs that matter, even if they can’t be graphed.
What is KVI?
KVI is a framework for noticing and naming changes that are hard to quantify, but deeply meaningful.
It’s not a method for evaluation — it’s a way of creating a shared language of awareness,
and making room to reflect on what’s really happening in your project or team.
Examples of KVIs
A staff member says, “This setup is actually more useful than I expected.”
Someone takes initiative without being asked — “Let’s try it this way.”
Conversations shift from “how to use the tool” to “why we’re using it.”
People start naturally bringing in the user’s perspective.
These aren’t dramatic milestones. But they signal that something real is changing — and that change is taking root.
Why KVI Matters
When subtle progress is ignored, it can get lost — and so can morale.
Metrics alone can create distance between leadership and the field.
Noticing small steps builds energy to keep going.
KVI is a lens for seeing what isn’t obvious — and sharing that vision helps teams regain a sense of forward motion.
How to Use KVI
Hold regular reflection sessions with KVI as a shared theme
Log both numbers and felt sense — track what’s working, not just what’s measurable
Capture user comments, practitioner perspectives, and real voices as value indicators
You don’t need a fancy tool to start. Sticky notes, whiteboards, Slack messages —
if you have a culture of noticing and sharing, you're already halfway there.
And if you’d like, we can also provide tools and templates to support that culture.
